Six girls to compete in ‘Miss Himalaya Pageant 2015’

DHARAMSALA, Oct 2: Six girls from the Himalayan region will contest for the ‘Miss Himalaya Pageant 2015’ over Oct 3-4 to be held at Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA) in Dharamsala.

IMG_0101The contestants, Chum Darang from Arunachal Pradesh, Priyanka Verma from Himachal Pradesh, Samrity Verma from Himachal Pradesh, Swattee Thakur from Himachal Pradesh, Tanshuman Gurung from Uttarakhand, and Tenzing Sangnyi from Tibet (living in Manali, Himachal Pradesh) will go through five rounds of competitions in two days. On the first day, talk and talent rounds will be held and on the second day, introduction, traditional costume and interview rounds will be held to decide winner of the competition.

The winner will win the crown and a cash prize of one lakh rupees (Rs 100,000/-). The first runner-up will be given 50,000 rupees and the second runner-up 25,000 rupees.

Miss Himalaya Pageant is aimed to provide a platform for young women from the entire Himalayan region ‘to promote its culture, preserve its environment, and foster understanding and friendship among the Himalayan people’ said Lobsang Wangyal, Director cum Producer of the event.

Lobsang Wangyal, who also organizes “Miss Tibet” hopes that the event could receive some financial help, which he says has been the major issue, to continue to hold the annual event in the future.

“Sponsorship for the Pageant has been the major issue. It is hoped that the event could receive some sponsorship from those who believe in the promotion of tourism, culture and women empowerment,” Lobsang said.

First held in 2012, the annual event has grown in popularity and the number of contestants has grown each year. Lobsang believes that more contestants will participate in the future.

Miss Jyoti Dogra, a local Indian girl from Dharamsala won the coveted title last year.
