World’s highest vineyard is in Tibet: Guinness World Records
DHARAMSALA, Oct 2: A Tibetan vineyard sitting at over 3,500 meters above sea level has been presented with the Guinness World Records for the “World’s highest vineyard.”
“Situated at an altitude of 3,563.31 metres above sea level, the ‘Pure Land & Super-high altitude vineyard’ in Cai Na Xiang, Qushui County of Lhasa, Tibet, is the world’s highest vineyard,” reported the Decanter.
The vineyard in Chushul County in the south-west of the Tibetan capital Lhasa was declared the world’s highest vineyard and awarded the certificate by the Guinness World Records Adjudicator Iris Hou earlier on Sept 27, the report noted.
According to the report, the record was the first ever set for ‘Highest Vineyard’ and that few other sites in Argentina’s Salta region come close to the vineyard in Tibet.
At the world’s highest vineyard in the Tibet, as many as 11 different grape varieties including Vidal, Muscat and an indigenous Icewine variety named Bei Bing Hong are planted across 66.7ha (1000mu) of land. The company; Rong Shun Biotechnology Development Ltd,
started planting vines at the site in 2012.
Though the high altitude of Tibet may mean having to face severe challenges throughout the four seasons of the year, the report noted that the cultivators have adopted techniques such as dry farming in spring, relatively late picking and irrigation systems imported from Israel to cope with these conditions.
