China violates its Employment law and International Labour law ahead of political sensitive month in Tibet

DHARAMSALA, March 9: Chinese authorities have deprived Tibetans of their weekly rest on Sunday in the month of March which also marks the politically sensitive 59th anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising Day against the illegal occupation of Tibet by the Chinese regime.

Chinese authorities have issued a directive demanding Tibetans from some areas of Karze County in the traditional Tibetan province of Kham to report on work during the Sundays in March, a reliable source from the region told Tibet Express.

The heavy presence of Chinese armed forces has become a common sight in the Chinese occupied Tibet in March due to the political sensitivity attached to the month. After the Chinese occupation of Tibet, on March 10, 1959, thousands of Tibetans took to the streets of Lhasa to protest against China’s repressive rule in Tibet. Tibetans across the globe mark the day as the Tibetan National Uprising Day.

But by depriving Tibetans of their weekly rest, China has violated both the Employment law of China as well as the Weekly Rest Convention of the International Labour.

The standard working Time System under the Employment law of China states that Workers shall not work more than 8 hours a day and shall not work more than 40 hours a week; workers have at least one day off per week.

While the Weekly Rest Convention of the International Labour. Weekly Rest Convention Convention, 1921is an International Labour Organisation Convention on the limitation of working Time limiting working time to eight hours per day, 48 working hours for a week and a weekly rest day.
