CTA seeks genuine autonomy but Tibetan youth’s call of independence is justified: President Sangay
DHARAMSALA, 10 June: Amongst our public, the entire youth still call for independence of Tibet, said the President of Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), Dr Lobsang Sangay.
President Sangay made the remarks in an interview with Abhishek Upadhyay, Editor, TV9 Bharatvarsh when asked whether his administration is seeking genuine autonomy or that the dream of Tibet’s independence from China is still alive or not.
“Their demand is justified as they point out that Tibet has a history of an independent past. And we can demand it as international law allows both independence and self-determination.”
But President Sangay added that “practically the most viable solution is to seek genuine autonomy for Tibet through Middle Way Approach and dialogue, hence we seek genuine autonomy for Tibet” as envisioned by His Holiness the Dalai Lama since the early 1970s.
Further, he spoke about the worsening situation inside Tibet under the Chinese occupation and that the world should voice its support on the issue of Tibet as he highlighted China’s expansionist design.
“We have been raising the Tibet issue and speaking against the Chinese government over the last 60 years,” he said and added that Tibet can be identified as the big brother among all the countries being repressed and oppressed by China as we experienced it first hand.
“The Tibetan issue and the movement is still very much alive today and we will keep it going through truth and non-violence.”
