DHARAMSALA, 9 April: Battle for Tibet, PBS FRONTLINE’s investigative documentary directed by Gesbeen Mohammad, has been nominated for an Emmy Award in the Outstanding Hard News Report: Long Form category at the 47th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards. The winners will be announced at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City, with news categories on May 27 and documentary awards on May 28, 2026.

First broadcast on PBS in February 2025, Inside China: Battle for Tibet uses undercover footage from inside the region, revealing China’s mass surveillance, forced colonial boarding schools, and the abduction of the 11th Panchen Lama. The documentary examines how the Communist regime controls Tibet’s Buddhist population and explores the ongoing battle over the succession of the Dalai Lama, Tibet’s spiritual leader.

It features testimonies from experts and insiders, including Dr. Gyalo, a leading Tibetan scholar on China’s colonial boarding schools, and political prisoner Namkyi, who recently escaped from Tibet, highlighting the human cost of occupation.

Director Gesbeen Mohammad wrote on her LinkedIn account, “Deeply honoured that Battle for Tibet has been nominated for an Emmy. With rare footage from inside the region, the documentary investigates China’s rule over Tibet. I am deeply grateful to the contributors who had the courage to speak with us.”

“This year’s documentary nominees represent an extraordinary range of storytelling, from deeply personal narratives to sweeping historical examinations,” said Christine Chin, Head of Documentary Emmys, as quoted by Variety. “These films challenge perspectives, elevate underrepresented voices, and demonstrate the power of documentary filmmaking to inform, engage, and inspire audiences worldwide.”

The Emmy nomination places Battle for Tibet alongside other high-profile entries, including Chasing a Ghost: The Search for Austin Tice (CNN Worldwide), The Hidden Homeless — The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper (CNN Worldwide), Million Dollar Highway Heists — Trafficked with Mariana van Zeller (Muck Media [National Geographic]), and The Rise of Germany’ s New Right (FRONTLINE | PBS).

The documentary earlier won the 2025 Foreign Press Association (FPA) Media Award in the Arts and Culture Story of the Year category.
