Earthquake in Tibet: Dalai Lama expresses sadness on loss of life, offers his prayers

DHARAMSALA, 7 Jan: The Tibetan spiritual leader, His Holiness the Dalai Lama has expressed deep sadness at the extensive loss of life and many injuries caused by the devastating earthquake that struck Tingri County in Shigatse City in the traditional Tibetan province of U-Tsang earlier this morning.

Expressing deep sadness over the earthquake in Tibet that has killed at least 95 people and injured 130 others, the Dalai Lama has said “I am deeply saddened to learn of the devastating earthquake that struck Dingri in Tibet and the surrounding regions this morning,” that “has caused the tragic loss of many lives, numerous injuries, and extensive destruction to homes and property.”

The Dalai Lama, who is currently in Bylakuppee Tibetan Settlement in Karnataka, south India for a month-long retreat to rest and recuperate after his knee surgery in June last year concluded by offering his “prayers for those who have lost their lives” and extending his wishes for a “swift recovery to all who have been injured.” 

A 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit Tingri County at 9:05 a.m. Tuesday, (Beijing Time) with the tremors of the massive earthquake reportedly felt in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu and in the northern Indian state of Bihar, which borders Nepal. The US Geological Survey reported the magnitude of the quake as 7.1.
