Tibetan women’s football team to play in Goa

[TNN] Panaji, Apr 2: The Tibetan national women’s team will arrive in Goa next month for a series of friendlies, possibly against three teams including Goa.

The Goa Football Association (GFA) executive committee which met at its headquarters on Thursday agreed to host the Tibetans for three friendlies in Goa, starting May 4 at the Duler stadium in Mapusa.

“There will be a total of three friendlies. We are still working out the modalities,” a GFA executive member told TOI after the meeting.

Yuwa, a Ranchi-based club — which uses sport and education to tackle child marriage and human trafficking problems —is likely to be the other team which will take part in the three-match series. The team run by a NGO was put together in 2009 and became the first Indian team to participate in the Schwan’s USA Cup in Blaine, Minnesota.

The Tibetan women’s football team too has been making news Tibet Women’s Soccer, according to its website, “aims to facilitate the expansion of the female Tibetan voice, nurture the idea that Tibetan women possess the talent and capabilities equivalent to men, forge the bonds of sisterhood and provide an arena in which they can safely experiment with these new developments.”

Meanwhile, the GFA executive committee also approved the Women’s Football League, likely to kick-off in September. The GFA has boosted women’s football off late with a series of initiatives, including the staging of the junior Nationals in Goa where the state team made it to the quarterfinals.

Even after the conclusion of the Nationals, the GFA did not disband the squad and instead organized the Inter-College Women’s League which saw healthy participation and competition.
