CTA mourns demise of former Representative of Office of Tibet Phintso Thonden

DHARAMSALA, 30 July: The Central Tibetan Administration(CTA) has held a mass prayer service to condole the demise of Phintso Thonden, its former Representative of North America.

“CTA will remain indebted to the contributions of Phintso Thonden who even after resigning from service was vigorously involved in serving the community,” www.tibet.net the CTA’s official website quoted CTA President Penpa Tsering as saying.

“We offer our deepest condolences to his family members”, he concluded.

Phintso Thonden, the former Representative of the Office of Tibet, passed away on Thursday in New York, the US due to prolonged illness.

He is survived by his wife, their two daughters and five grandchildren.

Son of Jamyang Phuntsok and Tsering Dolker, Phintso Thonden was born in Lhasa on 17 Jan 1937. He completed his primary education at Dr Grahams Homes, Kalimpong after coming into exile in 1958.

He started serving the CTA in 1964, soon after completing his college at St. Joesph in Darjeeling as an official at the Tibetan Foreign Affairs Office, which has now been renamed the Department of Information and International Relations.

He served as the representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in the Office of Tibet, New York from 1967-1973 and the Bureau of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in New Delhi from 1973-1976.

As a mark of condolence and respect for the demise of the former representative of the CTA missions, the offices of the CTA remained closed following the mass prayer service at Sikyong Hall at the Central Tibetan Secretariat here in Dharamsala on Friday.
