CTA’s DIIR Kalon meets US Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues

DHARAMSALA, 25 Feb: The Central Tibetan Administration’s Department of Information and International Relations(DIIR) Minister has met with the meets US Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues Under-Secretary Uzra Zeya.

The DIIR Kalon(Minister) of the CTA, Norzin Dolma met with the US Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues Under Secretary of State for Civilian, Security, Democracy, and Human Rights(J) Uzra Zeya at her office at the State Department on Thursday, reports Tibet.net, the CTA’s official website.

Kalon Norzin Dolma was accompanied by DIIR Secretary Karma Choeying at the meeting, the report said and added that the minister greeted the Under Secretary on behalf of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and CTA President Penpa Tsering and briefed the US Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues “about the current CTA’s firm commitment to the Middle Way Approach and the proactive approach it is taking to resolve the Tibet issue.”

The Minister has thanked Under-Secretary Zeya for her time and support and stated that the  Tibetan administration looks forward to continuing working with her.

Under Secretary Zeya intern has reportedly “expressed her eagerness to visit Dharamsala to meet His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the CTA officials in the coming months.”

According to the report, she arrived in Washington DC on Sunday for a week-long meeting within the State Department and on the Hill.

This is the DIIR Minister’s first official visit abroad and the report described it as a visit “to lay the groundwork for future engagements between the US Administration and CTA in resolving the Tibet issue.”

The US Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues has previously had a virtual meeting with the Representative of the Dalai Lama and CTA to North America Namgyal Choedup on 22 December 2021 when she took charge of the office.

The senior official from the Biden administration is the seventh US Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues. She took charge of the office in Dec. last year.

Robert Destro(2020 – 2021) was the last US Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues preceded by Sara Sewall (2014-2017), Maria Otero (2009-2013), Paula Dobriansky (2001-2009), the late Julia Taft (1999-2001) and Gregory Craig (1997-1999).
