DHARAMSALA, 1 Oct: As China marked the 75th founding anniversary of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in Beijing, over 50 activists from the Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) were detained by Delhi police for protesting outside China’s embassy in New Delhi today against Beijing’s human rights violations in Tibet.

The activists from the largest Tibetan NGO in exile stormed the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi before the police detained them as they declared the founding anniversary of the CCP as 75 years of occupation and repression since the Chinese occupation of Tibet beginning in 1951.

TYC activists shouting slogans demanding China free Tibet and calling on the CCP to stop the cultural genocide and repression in Tibet, among others, were blocked and detained by police while some were chased and wrestled to the ground.

“Over 50 of our activists, who protested in front of the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi against the 75th founding anniversary of the People’s Republic of China and the cultural genocide in Tibet, have been released after being detained at Mandir Marg Police station,” read a statement issued by the TYC on its Facebook handle.

Before staging the protest today, the TYC concluded a week-long mass cycle rally on Tuesday. The closing ceremony of the rally was held at Samyeling Tibetan Colony (Majnu Ka Tilla) and was attended by the former Deputy Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament in Exile, Acharya Yeshi Phuntsok, Shri Madhan Lal Ji (advocate and MLA), BTSM General Secretary Shri Pankaj Goyal Ji, along with other representatives from NGOs.

To highlight the Tibetan issue, to urge the international community to speak in support of Tibet, and to seek the support of the Indian government for the Tibetan people’s call for Tibet’s independence, a total of 54 activists pedalled more than 400 kilometres from Dickeyling Tibetan settlement in Dehradun to the Indian capital through 4 Indian states and two union territories for 1 week from 24-30 September.

Highlighting the importance of international solidarity with Tibet, TYC President Gonpo Dhondup declared the rally a success as it gained tremendous support from the local Indian community, as reported by Reveal Inside.

Additionally, Tibetans and Tibet supporters also observed a Global Action Day today, staging protests against the CCP’s rule and its harsh policies in Tibet across the globe.

China’s National Day, observed annually on 1 October, commemorates the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.
