Soon, a new monastery market will be inaugurated at Kashmere Gate metro station. The market which is under construction near Gate No. 1 of the station will provide job opportunities to around 150 people including Tibetans and people of trans-Himalayan regions.

The market which has been named as ‘USP Monastery Market’ is the brainchild of Delhi-based businessman Lobsing Tenzin Bhutia who has tied up with Parsvnath developers to set it up.

“I wanted to give employment to people of trans-Himalayan regions and those people from small towns who dreamt of owning a shop in a big city like Delhi but could not afford it. The DMRC had approved this space for construction of this market which will have 64 shops,” Bhutia said.

Talking about the intriguing name of the market, he elaborated, “USP here stands for Unity, Strength and Prosperity. We thought of giving this unique name to the market because we believe that it is a dream come true for these people. It is a retail market. They will sell clothes, footwear, etc. and set up small local business. We are also thinking of giving these shops at zero rental rate.”

The market will also have a restaurant and a coffee shop for visitors, CCTV cameras will be installed to keep all the activities under strict surveillance. Till now, Majnu ka Tila is the only place in Delhi where thousands of Tibetan refugees live and run businesses. Such efforts will generate more employment opportunities for them.
