US Special Coordinator for Tibet calls for immediate release of Tibetan writer Sabuchey, Tibetans wrongfully imprisoned by China

DHARAMSALA 24 June: US Special Coordinator for Tibetan issues has called on China to immediately release Tibetan intellectual and writer Thupten Lodoe and all other Tibetans wrongfully imprisoned.

US Special Coordinator for Tibetan issues Ms Uzra Zeya has said in a tweet that “the PRC’s unjust sentencing of Tibetan writer Thupten Lodoe to 4.5 years in prison is another egregious example of PRC authorities criminalizing freedom of expression,” while calling for “the immediate and unconditional release of Thupten Lodoe and all other Tibetans wrongfully imprisoned. 

The Tibetan intellectual and writer Thupten Lodoe (pseudonym: Sabuchey), was given the four and half years sentence around 14 June, eight months after being held in an undisclosed location by the Chinese authorities, Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD), a rights group based in Dharamsala said last week.

The development came hours after Ms Uzra Zeya met with the chairman of the Washington-based  International Campaign for Tibet(ICT) Richard Gere and its leadership.

Additionally, she has also met with a delegation of exiled Tibetan leadership comprising the Central Tibetan Administration’s(CTA) President Penpa Tsering, Speaker Khenpo Sonam Tenphel, Deputy Speaker Dolma Tsering Teykhang, Department of Information and International Relations(DIIR) Minister Norzin Dolma, and Representative Namgyal Choedup.
