TYC plans dedicated office in New York to counter Chinese disinformation on Pawo Lobga Rangzen

DHARAMSALA, 27 July: The Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) has announced plans to establish a dedicated office in New York, US, to counter what it describes as Chinese disinformation and propaganda surrounding the death and sacrifice of Pawo Lobga Rangzen, as the organisation expands its global campaign calling for a formal United Nations(UN) response to his self-immolation.
The announcement came as the TYC marked one week since launching its Worldwide Chain Hunger Strike Protest, a global campaign initiated following Pawo Lobga Rangzen’s self-immolation outside the UN Headquarters in New York on 2 July.
The proposed office will form part of the TYC’s broader effort to challenge what it describes as false narratives promoted by the Chinese government about Tibet and to ensure that the circumstances surrounding Pawo Lobga Rangzen’s sacrifice are not distorted or forgotten.
“The struggle for Tibet is not only being fought on the streets. It is also being fought in the information space,” the TYC said in its statement today.
The organisation said its campaign would use documentation, research, art, and the voices of Tibetans around the world to challenge Chinese narratives about Tibet. It has called on Tibetan scholars, writers, researchers, artists, filmmakers, journalists, students and social media creators to contribute to the campaign through research, writing, artwork, videos and advocacy.
The new initiative marks an expansion of the TYC’s ongoing Worldwide Chain Hunger Strike Protest, which began in Dharamsala on 19 July 2026, calling for a meaningful and formal response from the UN to the circumstances surrounding Pawo Lobga Rangzen’s self-immolation in protest against China’s colonial rule over Tibet.
Tibetans and supporters in New York have also continued holding demonstrations outside the UN Headquarters every Wednesday and Saturday.
The campaign has expanded to several locations, with solidarity actions reported in Dalhousie, Kalimpong, Dekyiling, Kullu, Odisha, Rajpur, and Tenzin Gang, according to the TYC.
The organisation said it would continue expanding the campaign until the UN provides a formal response to its demands. These include a formal and substantive UN response to the circumstances surrounding Pawo Lobga Rangzen’s self-immolation and the human rights situation in Tibet; an end to language that reduces Tibetans to a minority within China; accountability for China’s policies and repression in Tibet; recognition of Tibet’s historical status and right to independence; the repeal of China’s so-called Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law; and the immediate and unconditional release of Tibetan political prisoners, including the 11th Panchen Lama.
